Install so you can create an org chart on Windows

Paste this into Windows Terminal or Command Prompt:

If winget is missing, install App Installer from Microsoft, then paste again. Official Microsoft links only. GitHub Releases is the other path. For most PCs take draw.io-31.3.2-windows-installer.exe. Run the installer on the same machine. Files stay on GitHub. If SmartScreen warns on a first run, read the publisher. Prefer the GitHub asset over a renamed copy from search.

How to create an org chart

Install draw.io desktop with the command on this page, or take draw.io-31.3.2-windows-installer.exe from GitHub Releases. An msi and a zip also exist on that release if you want those.
Open draw.io desktop. You should get a window on this PC, not a website that asks you to upload a roster.
Start a new blank diagram. Skip the template gallery for this job. You want an empty page you will fill.
Add a box for each person and a connector for who reports to whom. Put the top person first. Draw a line from that person to each direct report. Repeat down the tree.
Save the .drawio file on this PC. Pick a folder you control. The blank page is not a chart until you save people and lines.

An org chart creator is a Windows desktop program that lets you make a new diagram of who reports to whom. You place people. You draw reporting lines. You save a file. draw.io desktop is one Apache-2.0 program that does that in a window on this PC. You install it, you start blank, you add boxes and connectors, you save.

This page stays on a chart you build yourself. Stay here when the group is an odd shape, when no starter matches, or when you want every box to be a person you chose. If a ready-made tree would save time, that sits on Org chart template.

The app does not know who works here. A blank page has no names. If you cannot name the top person, you do not have a chart yet. Write people you can stand behind. Then save.

Start a blank diagram

Open a new diagram in draw.io desktop. Choose a blank page. We will not invent extra menu names. Use the controls the window actually shows. If the first screen offers templates, close that list or pick a blank option. This job begins with empty space.

Confirm you are in a desktop window. A browser tab that asks you to sign in for a cloud folder is a different program. This article stays on the Windows app from GitHub Releases or winget.

Set a page size you can see. A huge canvas with one tiny box in the corner is hard to read later. Zoom so the first boxes are large enough to type a name. You can grow the page as the tree grows.

Add people and reporting lines

Drag a rectangle, or use a people shape the library actually shows. Type a name. Type a title on a second line if you want a title. That box is one person. Duplicate it for the next person rather than drawing a wild new shape every time. Same shape, new name. The chart stays readable.

The first box is often the person at the top of this group. Place that box near the top center. Direct reports go in a row under that box. Connect each report with a line from the manager to the report. Keep one direction. If every other line goes the other way, readers get lost.

Start with people you can check. A manager and two reports is enough for a first save. Confirm the names read correctly at a glance. Then place the next row. A new chart that has never saved one honest trio is a bad place to dump a whole department of guesswork.

If a person reports to two managers, draw two lines only when that is true. A line is a reporting fact. It is not decoration. If someone is dotted-line to a project lead, say so in the title line, or leave it off until you know how you want that shown. This page will not invent a dotted-line style name. Use the connector the app shows.

Assistants, contractors, and vacant seats are still boxes if you need them on the chart. Label a vacant seat as vacant. Do not type a real person into a seat that is empty. Do not leave a blank box with no text. A blank box looks like a miss.

Save the new chart

Save a .drawio file on this PC. Documents, a team folder you already use, a USB stick you will keep plugged in while you edit. We will not invent a cloud for this project. You pick the path. The blank diagram in memory is not your file. The save is.

Use a name you will recognize next week. A date in the filename helps if you keep versions. Closing the window does not save by itself if you never wrote the file. Save before you export a picture. Save before you send anything.

Export a png or a pdf only after the names are real. A picture of three empty boxes is still empty boxes. Export is optional. The .drawio file is the working chart. If you only needed a picture for a slide, export after the people are in, then keep the .drawio anyway so you can edit later.

A file on a USB stick needs the stick plugged in. Ejecting the stick while the chart is open can fail the save. Copy it to Documents if you need it after the stick leaves. A file on a network share is still a file. Wait until the share is available.

First run

After install, open the app once before you hunt a website named creator. Start a blank diagram. Place one name you trust. Draw one line. Save. If the window is empty, you have not placed a box yet, or you are still on a splash screen, or the path failed.

Windows may show a SmartScreen prompt on a first exe. Read the publisher. Prefer GitHub Releases. Winget skips some of that path because Microsoft already listed the package. If winget is missing, the exe is still honest. Do not fetch a second setup from search.

Updates live on GitHub Releases and on winget when the package updates. We do not invent a newer number than V31.3.2 here. Read the release. Usual Windows pick is still draw.io-31.3.2-windows-installer.exe. The msi is still an msi of this project. The zip is still a zip of this project.

When the new chart is wrong

The wrong person at the top is the usual miss. Move that box. Rewire the lines. Do not leave a junior person at the top because they were the first box you drew.

A spaghetti of crossing lines means the boxes are in the wrong places. Drag groups. Keep a row as a row. If two teams sit under one manager, put each team in its own cluster under that manager. We will not invent extra layout names. Stop when a person can read who reports to whom without a legend.

If you only have a list of names and no reporting facts, a creator will not invent the lines. Ask the people, or stop until you know. This page will not host a roster. It will not guess a manager.

If the diagram is actually a process, a network, or a floor plan, you are on the wrong job. This page is who reports to whom. Start over with people boxes. Or, if a starter tree would be faster, use Org chart template.

School PCs, labs, and uninstall

A lab image may block winget and unknown installers. Then this org chart creator install is closed for that hour. Do not fetch a wrapper to get around policy. Use a diagram tool already on the image, or wait until you control the PC.

A borrowed laptop you return in twenty minutes is a bad place to leave draw.io-31.3.2-windows-installer.exe. Use what is already on the machine, or do not install. Do not leave someone else a chart of other people names on the desktop.

Uninstall is Apps in Windows, or the project uninstall. Quitting the window is not uninstall. If you only wanted one chart, quit first. If you want the program gone, uninstall. Fetch again from GitHub Releases or winget, not from a wrapper.

Installer exe, msi, and zip

Usual Windows pick is draw.io-31.3.2-windows-installer.exe. The same GitHub release also lists draw.io-31.3.2.msi and draw.io-31.3.2-windows.zip. They are different packages of the same project. Pick one path. Do not run the installer and unpack the zip on top of each other because the first one felt slow.

Shared machines and the next chart

On a family PC, say if you installed a new diagram program. On a work PC, follow local policy. If policy blocks unknown exe files, winget may still work, or it may not. If both are blocked, stop. Softonic is still the wrong host in that hour.

Open the next blank diagram the same way. Install once. Make many charts. You do not reinstall for each team. If a new chart looks wrong, the names and lines are the suspect, not a missing second program.
